If 2007 was the year of the toy recall and mental gymnastics over what we eat, then what will 2008 hold? Raw milk, melting fat, the end of cheap food... the crystal ball is still a little cloudy but here are some of the stories to watch.
1. Raw Milk
People will go to extreme lengths to get it, farmers will risk their businesses to sell it, and most state governments want nothing to do with legalizing it. Raw milk -- milk that hasn't been pasteurized or homogenized -- was one of the most talked-about foods of the year.
Its fans say that pasteurization removes proteins, enzymes and healthy bacteria from milk, making it less nutritious, and that the taste of raw milk is incomparable. Those opposed to raw milk consumption -- including health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control -- argue that the harmful bacteria are of primary concern, and that the dangers posed by E. coli, salmonella and listeria are not worth the risk.
The debate is sure to continue in 2008 as raw milk goes mainstream, governments try to make it unappealing and people find more creative ways to get their hands on it.

"The cost is greater for clean, raw milk - no doubt. But there are many ways that I look at this. It's my vote, when the ballot doesn't count. When I buy raw milk, I vote for animals being raised according to the laws of nature, I vote for the humane treatment of these gentle, mild creataures and our appreciation of their gifts to us, I vote for unprocessed foods, local family farms, the preservation of land, and decisions left in the hands of the individual without interference from government. So little of what I do covers so many bases that are important to me. The federal government subsidizes processed foods, including processed milk, and those prices are artifically low - what you pay for raw milk is what real food costs when real people produce it.
The other piece of this puzzle for me and my family is that I'm teaching my children how to recognize and seek out real foods. We have very little in the way of disposable income, but quality of food comes before vacations and "things." I'm teaching them to nourish themselves for life so that they can fully participate in that life.
That being said, what we spend on highest-quality food, we do not spend on doctors or medications, as most Americans do. So in essence, the money /will/ be spent; the question is on what. I am nearly 50, and I have not taken a medication in - I'm not even sure how long. I feel as well and vigorous as when I was 20. My children don't see doctors for anything but check-ups. My husband has cured himself of a 21-year tree pollen allergy. We're grateful to have access to these foods and to the farmers who produce them. And after everything that's said and done, grateful to spend only $40 a month for the delivery of it all.
Here are two websites that are wonderful and informative on both the health benefits of raw milk and the difficulty in producing it:

As for the particulars of what you can do with raw milk, it's endless. With laughably little time and culinary talent, we make raw yogurt, raw mozzarella cheese, raw cream cheese, the whey that is the foundation of all of the lacto-fermented foods we consume, and more. Pick up a copy of the Nourishing Traditions cookbook online, and visit this website http://cooking.glassbrian.com/. These two sources will tell you most of what you need to know."

"This is a loud and clear message to all like-minded CDFA-type bureaucrats that this kind of attack will only result in humiliation.
25 years ago, Alta Dena was similarly crushed - I hope there's too large a raw milk following for that to occur now ..."

"CALIFORNIA RAW MILK WILL LIVE!
California's raw milk supply will NOT be interrupted in
January, 2008 or beyond!
JORDAN RUBIN TO SPEAK AT OPDC. LEARN MORE. It will be a happy, healthy New Year indeed! California consumers have spoken loudly against AB 1735's biased, scientifically unsupported restrictions on raw milk. Your passionate voices have been heard.
In the last three weeks, the CA raw milk battle front has been abuzz with tremendous grass roots effort, back stage political activity, and high level meetings. As a result, the course of California raw milk history has been changed.
Here is a brief update of the progress:
Three things protect your raw milk in California:
The Secretary of Agriculture has offered political support. A.G. Kawamura has dedicated himself to safe raw milk for California, declaring that "AB 1735 standards will not act as a de-facto ban on raw milk." Secretary Kawamura made this statement adamantly and repeatedly at a December 20th meeting with Claravale and Organic Pastures dairy representatives. He pledged to review our four-inch stack of documentation entitled “AB 1735: Raw Milk-The Unheard Argument” and promised to work with us to assure raw milk's continued availability.
A new law will be introduced in January reversing AB 1735. An investigation has exposed certain CDFA employees who met without authorization and, using erroneous data, advised staff members of the Assembly Agriculture Committee to place "eight special anti-raw milk words" into AB 1735. All CDFA agency legislative matters and bills must be reviewed and authorized by the governor's office, as required by executive branch and administrative policy and procedure. Instead, highly misleading information was used to rapidly and secretly pass AB 1735 on a "consent item" basis without discussion or open debate. Assemblymen and State Senators who voted for AB 1735 are now very upset that they were misled, and support immediate repeal on procedural grounds. The attorney general's office might step in, having noted an aberrant violation of established process in furtherance of a "biased agenda that is far from being consent item."
A lawsuit is being filed this week in San Benito County. Part of that lawsuit includes an injunction which legally secures raw milk producers against enforcement of AB 1735 standards. This allows more certain protection against AB 1735 until a new law can be passed.
While the raw milk fight is far from over, the safety of the California raw milk supply has been secured with multiple layers of strategic political, legislative, and legal efforts. Hearings will soon be announced as part of the new bill and legislative process that will start in January. Your attendance will be essential to deepen the protections put in place.
Keep Sending a Powerful Message: In order to strengthen our work going forward, we ask that you take pictures of yourself and your family holding raw milk bottles from Claravale and/or OPDC. Write on the picture: "Please support repeal of AB 1735." Then mail them to the Governor's office, your State Assemblymen, and State Senators' offices. The impact of a personal plea with a picture of your family is worth a thousand words.
Congratulations to all who participate in the "grass roots raw milk revolution." Your thousands of letters and calls made all the difference! CA Raw Milk is SAFE from AB 1735 and those that sought to eliminate this sacred healing whole food.
Warmly,
Mark McAfee, Founder OPDC"

Hey, Brother - Merry Christmas and Highest Blessings on the start of your Twelve Holy Nights!
Just wanted to check in here and see what's happening.
Your San Diego/Southern California readers may like to know that there's a new documentary tour headed your ways in a few days. More info can be found at:
http://insearchofgoodfood.blogspot.com/2007/12/readying-to-roll.html
where you'll find my comment on the road tour announcement for:
"In Search of Good Food". The documentary is about local, sustainable food systems in California. I have referred the producer to the Tierra Miguel Farm in Pauma Valley.
Today I introduced myself to the online international Biodynamics list known as BDNow. Here's my entire letter:
"Greetings All and Merry Christmas!
I have been "inspired by Rudolf Steiner's course in agriculture" directly and indirectly since the late 1980's when I was living in San Diego. I attended a pre-existing study group that was under the tutelage of Peter Dukich (who has crossed the threshold as of September 5, 2007). <http://curezone.com/blogs/fm.asp?i=972182>
The students consisted of local Biodynamic people including Rob Farmer who later helped start the Tierra Miguel Foundation: http://www.tierramiguelfarm.org/
and who became the lead farmer for their "demonstration farm" in Pauma Valley (operating as of about September of 2000). In 2000 I enrolled in Rudolf Steiner College: http://www.steinercollege.edu/
to join the college community with a primary interest of meeting others interested in forming a land-based community that would include Biodynamics. From that time on it seems that my personal path of destiny and karmic necessities held the greater sway and to such an extent that over the next seven years there is not much for me to show in terms of manifesting that vision of a Biodynamic land-based community. In 1997 I moved to Grass Valley inspired with the same interest and have essentially been focusing on being a friend and supporter of Biodynamics for our greater area ever since. We have at least three primary Biodynamic entities here (two of which have some community-supported "share" programs), an active study group plus some other new developments for local food sources underway.
I have been a member of the BD Association and BDANC (Biodynamic Association of Northern California) on and off over the last seven years or so and recently have been meeting with a newly formed Sierra Permaculture Guild (http://sierrapermaculture.org/) and I have been introducing that group to Biodynamics. The idea of a guild came to me over a year ago as a community-building basis for developing the land-based community. As soon as I received the announcement of the Sierra P/C group I immediately recognized that I had asked for this!
The main topic I have now that relates to and is "inspired by Rudolf Steiner's course in agriculture" is the idea of producing a documentary on "Biodynamics in America". The most recent impetus for this came to me while assisting another producer in his pre-production of a new documentary called: "In Search of Good Food": http://insearchofgoodfood.blogspot.com/
that (so far) has included a farm visit and interview with Harold Hoven at the Raphael Gardens of Rudolf Steiner College. (I have no idea how much of that footage will be included in the final cut.) Through my process of suggesting the inclusion of Biodynamic growers I realized that what I really wanted to see was a documentary wholly devoted to Biodynamics! Simultaneously I had been thinking an article on the history of Biodynamics that I shared with Rebecca Briggs, editor of Biodynamics.
http://www.biodynamics.com/
The idea is to substantiate the historical beginning of Biodynamic Agriculture as predating the subsequent beginnings of the Organic Movement. I would like the BD history account to be largely a collective narrative of interviews from whomever can contribute to it. In this way the history could be included as a chapter in the documentary as well as be transcribed for a Journal article.
At this stage the conversation with Rebecca is expected to resume after the new year and will include further attention to the BD documentary as well. There have been the beginnings of other conversations relating to possible content of the documentary including the idea/s of associate economies. Anyone interested in any of what I have introduced here may contact me at: chef@thesetruths.com
I am looking forward to further communications!
In gratitude!

Update on "The Raw Milk Controversy: Fact & Fiction" the first short run of the DVD is on track and expected soon. I am still awaiting feedback from several potential distributors and a couple business people. I have also been looking into producing an audio CD version. In addition I am looking into having a transcription made as the core body for a book with the working title: Raw Milk: Just Like Jesus and All His Brothers and Sisters Drank! The book has prompted further research into the history of milk and through that I have learned of the great Hindu Myth that speaks of the "Ocean of Milk". This is predating "The Milky Way". That's a lot of milk history and what I especially like is that all this milk is unpasteurized! There are no issues of safety with "holy milk". It's only when we get to the War of 1812 with the introduction of the "distillery dairies" that pasteurization had to come into picture because of the slop-feed, piss-poor quality milk that began being produced by cows living in their virtual ghetto next door to the distilleries. Pasteurization is nothing but a cover-up and I believe it's day of judgment is at hand!
Mark McAfee is asking that raw milk drinkers in California (and in support of preserving raw milk here) to introduce their other "milk" drinking friends to "real milk". One way that introduction can be encourages is through sharing: "The Raw Milk Controversy: Fact & Fiction". You can find and download two five-minute segments at: http://www.archive.org/details/TheRawMilkControversyFactFiction
Then I would like to encourage you to think about becoming a home-based distributor. I believe this initiative of the raw milk movement is a grass roots, community-building campaign and that means it is up to us!
Milk is life! Let's preserve "real milk" while we can. There's more to it than you might think!
Thank You!
